Tokyo – first evening food tour

Tokyo, Japan, March 27th 2026

In Japan for Easter this year, flew in via Copenhagen and got a warm welcome from the iconic Mount Fuji flying in to my first stop Tokyo.

Tokyo is a BIG city – over 30 million and counting, it is also noisy and is quite a culture shock coming fram calm Norway.

Landed in the morning so had a stroll around Shibuya, with the famous crossing – will try to get a better shot another day.

Something I will NOT do is dressing up as Pikachu and sightseeing around in Mario karts – looks both stupid and dangerous at the same time.

Looking for a lunch spot, this bear themed café came up as an alternative, but was dismissed due to demographic misfit.

Instead, the choice was a good bbq restaurant, including a snack of wagyu beef. Tender stuff.

I had booked a food tour in the evening, to get the tastebuds going, while trying to stay awake.

Our guide Michael gave a great presentation of the culinary scene around Shinjuku. the Omoide Yokocho was a narrow passage where old market stalls had been changed to food stalls.

Our first stop was at a Seafood restaurant where we started with maki, edamam, chicken karaage and torched mackerel.

The surprise box was a beautiful presentation of various seasonal sashimi.

The first sitting ended with a tofu dish with a lot of spices.

Shinjuku station is the busiest station in the world, with more than 2,8 million passagers daily. No wonder the district surrounding it is quite busy as well.

After a small streetside tonkatsu snack, and a glimpse of Godzilla, we went down the stairs to an informal Izakaya for our last sitting.

We had gyoza and some meet skewers, and ended up with a medium spicy grilled pepper dish.

A great first welcome to Tokio, getting to bed in a reasonable time, ready for new adventures tomorrow.
