Lille – 10 out of 10

Lille, July 19th 2025

Arrived directly from London via Eurostar under the English Channel, swift and efficient, directly to Lille centre. A bit rainy on arrival.

The weather cleared up while I was having a lovely lunch, so I decided to go to the citadel.

Taramasalata with blinis, and catch of the day
Still a military area, so no access to the citadel itself
There was a mention of a zoo – pretty sure this was not it

Lille is connected to waterways north and south by Canal de la deûle, which runs past the citadel.

A stylistic city centre, but also with some strange architectural experiments

Grand Place is the pride of Lille, and my hotel has a nice roof terrace overlooking it, a perfect spot for a blog update.

So what about this «10 out of 10». Well, Lille is the 10th biggest city in France, and with this I have visited them all:

  1. ParisParis – new discoveries in a big city
  2. MarseilleMarseille – langs vannkanten
  3. LyonLyon – Old town and Paul Bocuse student food
  4. ToulouseToulouse – street walking
  5. NiceNice i bakspeilet
  6. Nantes – went there in 2016, no blog then…
  7. StrasbourgStrasbourg – along the canals
  8. BourdeauxBordeaux – streets & sights
  9. MontpellierMontpellier – last stop
  10. Lille

Then it is debatable if Marne La Valée is a separate town or a Pris suburb, and if Rouen is bigger than Lille. But that is a good discussion for another blog post…

Looking forward to exploring more of Lille tomorrow.
