Frankfurt – last day before heading home

July 23rd 2023

Flight home today, but had the time to do brunch and some more sightseeing before leaving for the airport.

When passing the main dome church earlier it has been close but today it was open once the Sunder service had ended.

Inside it was decorated with several triptychs, altar pieces and sculptures. This is an area that has switched between protestantism and catholicism so the impression is a little mixed.

It also had a small museum with many liturgical objects, proof of a wealthy past in this part of Europe.

Then, as an exercise, I mounted the observation tower. As always with these stairs, they are not fit for people that suffers from vertigo or claustrophobia. But the view was great, with the old town framed by the river and the high-rise buildings.

The former Paulskirche is a special building, it has been turned into a centre for communication and dialogue, with a grand conference hall at the top. A very special building, which also had a grand mural presenting a collage of important German opinionists through the times. I think they for the most part looked angry…

Before heading to the airport I had one more local speciality to try – Grüne Soße – green sauce – which can be served with any kind of meat. It was a very herby and creamy sauce that went well with the equally local Frankfurter.

On this last day I want to thank travel companions and all the wonderful people I have met on my journey. Traveling is about new impulses and learning, and I have had so many fun and interesting encounters this time, both getting valuable local tips, but also discussing everything from Champagne, the political landscape of different countries, the best bars in the world, pharmaceutical industry, collection of thimbles, and small towns in Italy, just to name a few.

And it is also a reminder that it is a small world, meeting an American couple that have lived three years in Oslo around 300 meters from where I grew up.

And sorry to all of you that has had to listen to me promoting how beautiful Norway – and Oslo – is as a travel destination.

So this concludes the travel blogs from these three weeks – I will come back with some “best of” posts in a few days.
