Strasbourg – along the canals

July 18th 2023

The City centre of Strasbourg lies on an island formed by two branches of the huge canal system that lies west of the Rhòne river which forms the border between France and Germany.

Arriving a bit late, to walk the boundary of the old town along these canals seemed like a good way to get a first grip of a city I have never been to before.

The life in this city – both as tourists and locals – is really lived close to these waterways. Half-timbered houses, sluices, picturesque bridges and a lot of flowers and trees makes this very charming.

I spent a couple of hours walking, just interrupted by a short but intense thunderstorm.

Wanting the first meal in Alsace to be typical the choice was Choucroute – the French term for the german sauerkraut. Served with different kind of meats, with mustard, horseradish and bread to go along, this was a hearty welcome meal.

After a glass of white wine at one of the canal boats serving as bars and restaurants along the river I finished the tour and had just enough room left for an evening ice cream.

Yet to have a detailed plan for tomorrow, but it will definitely include getting to know more of the interior of the city centre.
