Dijon – leaving for Strasbourg

July 18th 2023

Last morning in Dijon. As the main market has been closed all the time until this morning this became the first place to visit this morning. A big and varied local market, aimed at the locals, not the tourists.

The best food artisan shops is usually found in close proximity to such a market, and when I saw this bakery in action and noticed that they had their own sandwich shop the breakfast was in the bag.

Few things can beat a French baguette that is less than an hour old! So simple, yes so good!

The Notre-Dame church lies prominently in the centre of town, close to the old palace. Having viewed it from all angles (such as this side from yesterday) it was finally time to get in. An elegant church with massive stained glass window and a plastered and arced ceiling.

The final stop in Dijon was a return to the gastronomy centre, where I wanted to see three small exhibitions about French gastronomy. They were well curated, with both French and English as language options for all the displays.

The best part was the pastry section, explaining the history of the most famous variants, and also displaying recipes for different variants. Will make!

This cake sculpture was displayed at the end of the pastry exhibition. Is it a forgotten cake? A tribute to imperfection? Or is is just that the party is over? All of those were given as interpretation options by the artist. Cool stuff!

Saying bye to Dijon and hello to Strasbourg with this meta picture from the blog update session on the train, which offered a decent wifi – unless when we were traveling at over 200 km/h.
