Lyon – A trip to the food hall

July 12th 2023

A bit cooler today – nice! I decided to go back to the food halls of Paul Bocuse, which i remember from my visit here in 2016.

Across the street yet another version of this iconic picture – here in form of a full mural.

The food hall itself is what I call a modern version, with upscale producers in richly decorated stalls. Of course aimed for tourism but also with many locals using this for they everyday or festive shopping.

The Lyon red praline is something that you see again and again, in different forms – this is a fairly soft almond praline that is dyed red. Very distinctive of Lyon.

Apart from a brioche with pralines I resisted everything the food market had to offer but none the less stayed there for a long time for inspiration.

Then I took a bus back to the old tows where I had seen some really good salads being served the day before, so I decided for a Lyon salad which is in reality an egg and bacon sandwich. Delicious!

There are two funiculars running up the hill, one to the basilica, and another one to a residential area but with a midway stop at the ancient roman theatre.

I started at the top, nothing much to see there but it looked like a calm residential area.

The midway stop where the cable cars meet is where the roman theatre is.

This is now a concert venue, and the amphi theater itself was restored, while the surrounding area were ruins where you could walk around freely.

There was a nice view both further uphill to the basilica, as well as back down to the city.

Back down in the city I had a short pit stop at the hotel and then went out for a walk as the evening started.

These days have gone so fast – could not really believe it was my last night in Lyon. I found this highly rated Bouchon and had to try yet more Lyon specialities.

This time I went for poached eggs in bourgogne sauce, a peace of slow cooked veal shank, and of course my go to cheese as dessert.

Tomorrow it is onwards to Beaune, one hour train trip up north, and entering into deep Burgundy wine area.
